Wat opvalt aan mensen als Madoff en op eigen bodem René van den Berg is eigenlijk dat hun oplichterij zo gewoontjes is, dat hun bedrijf zo sterk leek op bonafide instellingen. Nee, dan de Schotse avonturier Gregor MacGregor, die in de jaren 1820 kennelijk met enig succes in Engeland, Frankrijk en Nederland staatsleningen en landrechten verkocht voor Poyais. Dit was een door hem bedachte Middenamerikaanse republiek in de buurt van Honduras. De effecten zagen er indrukwekkend uit: een fraai staatswapen, vertrouwwekkend gesierd met Britse eenhoorns, suggesties van de Engelse en Schotse vlag en twee stoere indianen. Het mooiste vind ik echter de zinspreuk: Nescius Vinci, onwetend overwonnen worden. Een pure gotspe om dat als zwendelaar op het papier te zetten waarmee je argeloze beleggers een oor aan naait.
Economists tend to feel that our capitalist economic system is good, because it ultimately creates the most wealth for all. Generally, however, they are encouraged to overlook questions of morality, and to think rather in terms of functionality and utility. Part of the problem is that for much of the twentieth century, the moralists gravitated towards Marxism, which was at its base not founded on sound science. Thus economists think of themselves as scientists, and historians concerned with ethics and morality tend to know little about the scientific history of economics because they have been pursuing chimeras.
